About the Farm and Mission Statement

Blair's Sunset Haven, Inc. was started by Nancy Foster over 10 years ago.  Originally, Nancy wanted two horses (Shalom and Sunndetta), one for her and one for her husband.  Later, she purchased Spot, a foundered 4H pony, from the Sugar Creek Auction for her grandson.  As Nancy researched the proper care for horses, she learned of horse slaughter and opened her barn to horses that were older or deemed unridable for physical reasons (ideal horses for auction and purchased by killer buyers).

The first rescue horse Nancy took in was Blair, a Tennessee Walker with an arthritic hind end.

Some time after Blair came, Sunndetta colicked and died.  After that, Nancy agreed to take Figure and

her adult son, Duke.  Duke had been blinded in an accident, and his owner was unable to care for him

any longer due to a spinal injury.  Animal Planet learned of Duke and Figure's story and made it an

episode of "A Pet Story" out of it.  After the show aired, Nancy received several requests to take other

blind horses, due to a lack of education and facilities necessary for housing a blind horse.

Years later, several additions were added. A second barn was built, and later extended to house more horses.  New pastures were created, and much of the older fencing was replaced or reinforced with high-tensile wire encased in heavy plastic, which is safer for blind horses because they cannot walk through it or become entangled in it. To date, there are eleven seeing-impaired horses, four miniature donkeys, three miniature horses, two pot-bellied pigs, and fourteen sighted horses. Several horses have died over the years and are buried in a back field beneath a willow tree. Some horses have been lucky enough to have good health and were adopted out to loving homes.

Mission Statement

Blair’s Sunset Haven, Inc. in Wakeman, OH is a charitable corporation with three main purposes: (1) to rescue and recover animals, (2) to educate about the responsibility of ownership of animals, and (3) to prevent animal cruelty.  Sunset Haven is a retirement home where elderly, disabled or abused horses can live out the remainder of their lives in a peaceful, loving environment. The Haven’s dual purpose involves the care of these wonderful animals, and the promotion of educational and therapeutic programs designed to assist animals and humans alike.. When possible, younger, healthy animals are adopted out to loving “forever” homes, where they will remain until their death or the adoptee can no longer care for the animal, in which case it is returned to Sunset Haven.
